Human-AI Integration
While traditional Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a field of research focused on the interface between humans and machines, I advocate an approach called “Human Augmentation,” which uses technology to enhance human capabilities. The scope of human capabilities enhanced through Human Augmentation extends beyond physical augmentation to include intellectual abilities such as existence, sensation, and cognition. This concept of augmentation extends beyond the individual level to the vision of an “Internet of Abilities (IoA),” a future society where technology and humans are interconnected via networks and complementarily enhance each other’s capabilities. Within this IoA framework, the goal is to realize “Human–AI Integration,” in which humans and artificial intelligence (AI) are highly integrated. In this lecture, I will introduce examples such as “Silent Speech,” which enables communication without vocalization, and “Skill Transfer Systems,” which fuse human visual information with real-world agents, and discuss future prospects for the relationship between humans and technology.
